The island of Lanzarote is one of the best places for cycling that currently exists in Europe, whether as sport, hobby or holiday, cycling through the different routes marked on the island has become an experience.
There are many routes around the island, both for professionals and for amateurs, for road or mountain biking, at all times you can find different signs that tell us where to go and what paths to take.
Lanzarote meets the best requirements for all types of cyclists: roads with asphalt layer of good quality, low traffic, and a orography without extreme altitudes presenting pleasant routes for basic and resistance training, as well as a mild climate that allows pedaling during all year.
The Mirador del Rio, located 400 meters above sea level in the Risco de Famara is one of the most representative architectural creations of César Manrique. Plasma, in the succession of artistic and architectural details, his enthusiasm for integrating art and nature.
It is located in the immediate vicinity of the remains of an old military battery that dates back to the late nineteenth century, the Mirador dominates El Río, the narrow strip of sea that separates Lanzarote from La Graciosa.
Today, we are going to give you 4 brush strokes on one of the most successful routes among cyclists who rent our road bikes, it is the excursion we prepare that goes from Costa Teguise to Mirador del Rio.
It is a circular route departing from our shop located in Costa Teguise and returning to it, next to the great Sand Beach Resort point of departure for much of the excursions that we organize with departure in Costa Teguise.
This route that we organize is ideal for all types of cyclists, from those who want a complete and demanding training with an accumulated slope of 480 meters and an approximate distance of 65 kilometers, to those who just want to enjoy a day of road cycling among friends touring fantastic landscapes.
Regarding the route, once we start the route from our shop in Costa Teguise it is important to take the cycling route when passing through Los Arcos at the exit of Costa Teguise.
Along the route we will pass through the towns of Guatiza, Mala, Arrieta and their cactus gardens. The main characteristic of these northern towns are the large plantations full of cochineal cactus, also called "tuneras". Throughout the nineteenth century Guatiza was a very prosperous population thanks to the production of red cochineal, a natural dye in high demand.
After passing through Arrieta, a small fishing village, we will begin the ascent towards Ye, one of those traditional towns of the island, with its white houses and its green doors, a population belonging to the municipality of Haría, located just at the foot from the north face of the volcano La Corona.
Past Ye, our destination will be closer, Mirador del Rio. Where we can enjoy one of the most spectacular panoramic views of Lanzarote. From the watchtower, we can contemplate the eighth island of the Canary Islands, La Graciosa, accompanied by the group of islets that give name to the Chinijo Archipelago Natural Park.
At its feet, at the base of the cliff that shelters it, the reddish colors of the Salinas del Rio stand out, also called Guza, the oldest in the Canary Islands.
The return we will do through Haría, this municipality is known by the nickname of the Valley of a Thousand Palm Trees, it stands out for enjoying a special microclimate that makes its lands the greenest on the island. Here you will find most of the native flora, including its known endemisms, unique in the world. Here we can stop to refresh ourselves in the old market with more than 300 years of history and follow the route through the Valley of a thousand palm trees to descend through Tabayesco and return to Costa Teguise by the cycle path through Mala Guarida.
